Scientists who have grown a human EAR on a rat will be able to use them in 5 years

Human ears to could be ‘grown to order’ within five years, claim Japanese scientists who have unveiled a rat with an ear on its back.
The Tokyo and Kyoto university technology could be used to help children born with facial abnormalities, as well as youngsters mauled by dogs.
Adults, including soldiers injured in battle of people who have suffered accidents, could also benef

At the moment, replacement ears are sculpted from cartilage taken from the patient’s ribs.
However, multiple operations are needed, plus the removal of the cartilage is painful and chest never fully heals.

In contrast, the new technique would require just a small sample of cells as starting material.
Plus, the finished ear would be a living thing and so should grow with the child.
The scientists began by turning human stem cells – ‘master cells’ – into cartilage cells.

The lab-grown cartilage was then formed into tiny balls and placed in inside plastic tubes shaped like a human ear on a rat’s back.
After two months, the framework dissolved, leaving behind what looks like a two-inch hear lying flat against the animal’s back.
The technique is one of several being perfected around the world, in the aim of making bespoke replacements for body parts damaged by accidents, ravaged by disease or malformed at birth.

The four-year-old girl in India with a tumour on her head the size of a football

'She was a normal child but as she grew, we noticed a lump growing in the middle of her head,' explained her mother Pramila, a domestic worker.
'At first we thought it was just a boil and would go but it only grew bigger with time.
'She would cry if I touch it or lie her down for sleep.'

But her parents could do little but wipe away her tears, as Renu could not have an operation because they did not have the money to see a doctor.
But she was saved by the kindness of strangers, who raised awareness of her plight by posting shocking pictures on social media.
Her story reached Akhilesh Yadav, chief minister of Uttar Pradesh state, who asked officials to give Renu a free operation to remove it.

The rare tumour, known as giant occipital encephalocele,  was finally cut off by a team of surgeons at King George's Medical University, Lucknow, on December 22.
The tumour, one of only two known cases in the world, had been growing in Renu's occipital region - the part of the brain which controls sight - ever since she was born, said Dr SN Kureel.
But while it was benign, it was still dangerous.

'If it was not operated quickly, the tumor would have grown further and eventually ruptured. If that had happened, she would have lost her life,' Dr Kureel explained.

Medics say that without her maternal support, the hours-old baby might have succumbed to starvation and hypothermia.

She told local media: 'I'm a new mother and I have milk and I recognised the needs that this poor little creature had.'

She added: 'I think any woman would have given her nourishment in the same circumstances.'

Heart-warming story of how this one Japanese train station
is kept open for just a single passenger

This is one of those stories that will fill your heart with joy and leave you smiling.

Kami-Shirataki, a remote train station in Japan that was meant to close down three years ago, has stayed active to cater to one lone passenger. A train makes stops at the station twice each day just so a teen can travel to and from high school.

According to reports, Kana Harada, who is among the 40-odd residents of the village of Shirataki, is the only person to board the special train at 7:04 am and return in the evening at 5:08 pm sharp.

Even though the train station was meant to shut down, Japan Railways decided to continue services just for Kana. According to the CCTV Facebook page, the station has a unique timetable keeping Kana's travel details in mind.

The station will continue the special service until March 26, Kana's graduation, and close down for good after that.

Newborn baby is rescued from a drain by policeman after it was abandoned...

A newborn baby slowly dying in minus 16C temperatures has been rescued just minutes before death after its parents abandoned it in a drain.

The child was left without so much as a rag as it became stiff and blue while enduring freezing temperatures overnight.
The newborn’s gender was not identified in reports from Ordos, one of 12 major cities in China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, where the child was found lying in a pool of excrement.

Passers-by were reported to have discovered the child and initially thought it was dead before a brave policeman jumped in the drain to fish it out.

Fearsome-looking mountain lion is found with a second set of TEETH growi...

A mountain lion has been discovered in southeast Idaho with a second set of teeth growing out of its head.
The big cat was killed by an unidentified hunter last week in Weston, who then reported the animal's bizarre deformity to the authorities, Idaho State Journal reports.
Idaho conservation officers, who were sent a photograph of the kill, were shocked to find the year-old lion had a separate set of teeth growing out the left side of its forehead.

Experts have not been able to agree on the cause of the unusual mutation.
One theory is that the mountain lion's extra set of teeth may be remnants from a conjoined twin which died in the womb.

Another is that it is a type of tumor called a teratoma which can sometimes grow other body parts such as hair, teeth, bones - even eyes.
Regional wildlife biologist Zach Lockyer told Idaho State Journal the unusual deformity had left experts stumped.

Ötzi the iceman reveals secrets of European migration | Report|

Ötzi the iceman has fascinated scientists since his frozen 5,300-year-old corpse was discovered by Alpine hikers in 1991.
Now, three and a half years after discovering that Ötzi was murdered, experts have now found discovered was suffering from a nasty stomach bug.
It is this bug which has shed fascinating new light on the migration patterns of prehistoric man, showing that Europe’s first farmers are most likely to have come from the Middle East

The findings have been presented to the journal Science by a research team from the Institute for Mummies and the Iceman, at the European Research Academy in Bolzano, Italy.
Painstaking work has enabled the scientists to use the ulcer bacterium in Ötzi’s stomach to determine the origins of Europe’s first farmers.
Scientists recovered samples of Helicobacter pylori from his frozen stomach tissue. It is a bacterium which infects about half the human population and is also linked to stomach ulcers.

A hybrid version of the bacterium is still to be found in modern day Europeans. It is a hybrid of strains originating in Eurasia and Africa.

The strain discovered in Ötzi’s stomach remains is purely Eurasian which, according to experts, is hugely significant.

It had been believed that Africans moved into Europe more than 20,000 years ago as the glaciers began to retreat.

Had this been the case there should have been evidence of the African strain in Ötzi’s stomach tissue.
But the presence of only the Eurasian strain has led scientists to believe that the Africans arrived after Ötzi came to a bloody end – having been shot with an arrow and then bludgeoned to death.

Instead Ötzi’s DNA resembles that of farmers who came from the Middle East, possibly having originated in Asia – with the strain of bacterium most closely resembling that now found in and around India.

A nurse spends $10,000 having 4lbs of fat injected into her
bum so she can look like Kim Kardashian

A nurse has undergone $10,291 (£7,000) worth of plastic surgery so she can have a bum to rival her idol Kim Kardashian.
In a bid to make her bottom more bootilicious, Marlene Chinea, 36, underwent a Brazilian Butt lift, where doctors injected four pounds of fat into her backside to make it bigger.
Marlene, from Miami Beach, Florida, decided to undergo the dramatic procedure after years of attempting to naturally boost her asset with no results.

'No matter how much exercise I did, I'd never get the results I wanted,' she said. 'I was okay with my bum before but I thought a little more would accentuate my assets. I simply wanted more projection.

Marlene claims that working out for several hours, five to six times a week, she still couldn't get the results she wanted. At one point she claims she was doing over 300 squats or lunges a day.
But before Marlene could undergo the operation she had to gain as much weight as she could - the procedure involved taking fat from other body parts and transferring it to her bum.

British soldiers may face Iraq war murder charges after number of 'victi...

British soldiers could face murder charges for their actions on the battlefield during the Iraq war.
Investigators from the Iraq Historic Allegation Team (Ihat) set up by the Ministry of Defence disclosed last night that UK soldiers who have served in Iraq may face prosecution for crimes including murder.
It is likely to raise fears among hundreds of soldiers that they could be arrested and charged simply for doing their duty.

Mark Warwick – the head of Ihat, which was established in 2010 to investigate alleged criminal activity by UK forces – said the unit had been ‘overwhelmed with cases’.
While it has been investigating hundreds of allegations, this is the first time it is thought there is evidence for successful prosecution.

The number of victims of alleged ill-treatment in Iraq between 2003 and 2009 has risen tenfold since the unit was set up. In 2010, it was dealing with cases involving 152 victims. The figure is now 1,500 victims, according to Ihat’s latest quarterly update.
Of these, 280 are victims of alleged unlawful killing by UK forces in Iraq, and there are 1,235 alleged cases of ill-treatment, including accusations of rape and torture.
